About Unitil Corp

Unitil Corp (NYSE: UTL) is a regulated utility holding company that distributes electricity and natural gas to approximately 215,100 customers across New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. Revenue comes primarily from state-regulated distribution rates charged to residential, commercial, and industrial customers, with gas operations generating $299.6 million in FY2025 (roughly 56% of total operating revenue) and electric operations contributing the remainder. Unitil operates through five wholly-owned distribution utilities: Unitil Energy (electric, New Hampshire), Fitchburg (electric and gas, Massachusetts), Northern Utilities (gas, New Hampshire and Maine), Bangor Natural Gas Company (gas, Maine, acquired January 31, 2025 for $71.4 million), and Maine Natural Gas Corporation (gas, Maine). The company also owns Granite State Gas Transmission, an interstate natural gas pipeline subsidiary. Regulated rates are set by the New Hampshire Public Utilities Commission, the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, and the Maine Public Utilities Commission, creating a cost-of-service model where allowed returns are determined by regulators rather than market competition. The business is capital-intensive and debt-reliant, consistent with regulated utility economics.

Revenue model
State-regulated cost-of-service distribution rates billed to residential, commercial, and industrial customers for electricity and natural gas delivery. Gas operations produced $299.6 million in FY2025 operating revenue (56% of total); Gas Adjusted Gross Margin was $199.1 million (63% of total Adjusted Gross Margin). Electric revenue includes Fitchburg's $79.1 million in FY2025. Rates are approved by state public utility commissions.
Products and services
Electric distribution service (Unitil Energy, Fitchburg); natural gas distribution service (Fitchburg, Northern Utilities, Bangor Natural Gas, Maine Natural Gas Corporation); interstate natural gas transmission pipeline (Granite State Gas Transmission); wholesale electric power (Unitil Power); centralized administrative and professional services to affiliates (Unitil Service).
Customers and end markets
Approximately 215,100 total customers as of FY2025 filing. Residential customers account for the majority of revenue across segments. Commercial and industrial (C&I) customers include paper manufacturing, rubber and plastics, cannabis growing and processing, precision machining, specialty chemicals, healthcare, education, retail, hospitality, shipbuilding, food production, electronics, and outdoor products manufacturers.
Value-chain role
Last-mile regulated distributor of electricity and natural gas. Owns and operates local distribution infrastructure and, through Granite State, an interstate transmission pipeline. Does not generate electricity at scale or produce natural gas; procures and delivers energy under regulatory oversight.
Geographic exposure
All revenues and long-lived assets are in the United States. Service territories span New Hampshire (southeastern seacoast and state capital regions including Concord), north central Massachusetts (greater Fitchburg area, approximately 170 square miles), and Maine (Bangor area and greater Portland region including Augusta).
